Proposals

Proposals for volumes to be produced by the Navy Records Society are welcome, whether from members or non-members, though editors of volumes must be members. Proposals are considered by the Publications Committee which makes recommendations to the Council.

Proposals should be made to the General Editor (see the Society's contact page). They should be typed in double space, about four A4 pages long, and provide the following information:

  • The object of the volume - its principal subject, period and focus.
  • The subject matter of its constituent parts or chapters which usually consist of series of documents preceded by introductory essays.
  • The structure, organisation and length of the volume with any special needs resulting from the format of the original material.
  • The importance of the material proposed for publication in shedding light on controversy, unknown aspects of naval history, and important developments or personalities.
  • The qualifications of the proposed editor to make the selection of documents, to transcribe and edit them, to provide introductory chapter essays and to complete the volume by proof reading and indexing it.

All proposals will be acknowledged by the General Editor who will be happy to answer any questions about procedure. There are notes for the guidance of editors to help you.
